Films make us laugh, cry, think, reflect, perhaps even pray sometimes. But what do we see? What is there to learn? Is there a hidden spirituality we can discover? And how is the story told, and what do we learn from that? It’s not quite Kermode & Mayo, but the unholy alliance of Mike Jowett and the UK’s leading Bible Storyteller Bob Hartman, who both share a passion for cinema and story-telling, will try to make it an enjoyable experience! All 4 movies are watched in the evening on our large screen HD projection screen in the El Palmeral lounge, with time the next day to reflect, discuss, consider and journal our findings. Mike has led this retreat several times previously, but this time Bob will be bringing his own unique communication skills to the week, looking at how stories are developed, and what we can learn about the ‘world views‘ in the minds of Producers and Directors.

They share a love of Movies.
Who is the programme for?
This retreat is a little different to the others, as the Main Event is in the evening, as we sit down, often with Popcorn, definitely on a comfy seat, and with a drink of your choice. There are a few rules, you know them, no mobile phones, no rustling, no arriving late, no kicking of seats etc.
The difference here is that we share in the show, may have a brief chat over a nightcap, but then retire for the evening. The work of the next day is a shorter Morning session with almost a ‘Lectio Divina’, perhaps ‘Video Divina’ of ‘Divine Viewing‘, looking to follow almost a monastic practice of viewing, reflection and prayer intended to lead us to that which God has to say to us personally. We will not be seeing films as just to be critically studied, although we will do that, but as the living message. Indeed, the Message is in the Medium……..
With ‘work’ done in the evening, there is more free time during the day to relax, refresh and renew, so it’s the best of both worlds really.
So who’s it for? Well, anyone who loves a good movie really, but if you’re in any role where communication is important, or you are interested in the use of Movie Media in church or small groups, you will find plenty to get your teeth into. Oh, by the way, it might be good fun as well …
